Sapwood: The tree’s inner plumbing that transports water from the roots to the leaves. Sapwood is produced in the cambium inward. This means that the youngest wood is closest to the cambium, or the outside, and they oldest wood is closest to the pith, on the inside. As sapwood ages the cell harden and become a part of the heartwood.
