Marguerite's Native Oak Community Landscape

At the Santa Margarita LATO trail entrance

Naturalist, bug-lover, artist and San Luis Obispo County Poet Laureate Marguerite Costigan is a longtime LATO supporter. Marguerite is the founder of the popular Santa Margarita School Nature Challenge, a project that began in 2005 and continues today with monthly challenges for young nature detectives in the school library. Marguerite has generously shared her passion for exploring nature, especially bugs, through numerous other projects and nature trail activities.

Marguerite’s Native Oak Community Landscape was dedicated on June 5,2016 at the Santa Margarita LATO trail entrance. Penny Nyunt of Las Pilitas Nursery helped us select native plants for this special learning landscape. Though the plant community is still in the “getting established” phase and requires summer watering (by volunteers!), it will eventually survive on its own.

Thanks to landscape designer Jackie Williams, native plant advisor Penny Nyunt/Las Pilitas Nursery, the California Conservation Corps, Transitions Mental Health Association~Growing Grounds, and key volunteers Nathan and Dan Sharon + many others who have helped plant and care for this special landscape.
