Identification Pointers
Black bears are smaller than other bears in comparison. Males tend to be larger than females, weighing between 126 – 551 lbs. (females are between 90 – 375 lbs.). They have larger ears, a pale muzzle, and a rounded back. Fur can be black, brown, cinnamon, blond, creamy white, or bluish gray in color.
Behavior Tips
Black bears are omnivores; roughly 85% of their diet consists of vegetation. They have a great sense of smell, which is about seven times greater than dogs. They also have better eyesight and hearing than humans. Black bears can be active at any time of day or night, but typically forage at night. Black bears are excellent swimmers, which helps them catch fish to feed upon. Black bears also climb regularly to feed, escape enemies, or to hibernate.
