Title/Author: She’s Wearing a Dead Bird on Her Head by Kathryn Lasky and David Catrow

Publisher/Date/Price: Hyperion Books for Children, 1995, hardcover, price unknown

Length/Audience: 40 pages, ages 6 to 11

Commentary:  This book, set in 1896, is a mostly true story about the beginning of the Boston Audubon Society, The drawings have realistic bird depictions. I also liked learning about the controversy surrounding convincing people not to kill birds to decorate hats.

This book is a treasure…discovered in a bargain bin at a small bookstore. It’s a great story that is timeless and inspirational – for children of the 1890s and today.
