Identification Pointers

The raccoon is best known to have a dark mask and a ringed tail. Their grizzled fur typically varies from gray to blackish, although they can also be albino, dark brown, or a cinnamon color. During the winter, a yellowish or reddish tinge can develop on the nape of their neck. Raccoons can weigh between 8 to 20 lbs.

Behavior Tips

Raccoons are omnivores and are known to eat whatever food items are most common in an area. Their diet consists of insects, worms, fruits, walnuts, acorns, birds, bird eggs, and fish. They are nocturnal animals. Raccoons are typically solitary animals, but have been known to tolerate each other and form groups (of up to 100 animals per km2) when there is an abundance of food present in an area. Raccoons are also known to carry rabies and should be avoided.
